An island of awesome beauty, Santorini or Thera
or Oia, along with its nearby islets, are the fragments of a volcano that
massively erupted about 1625 BC. They are cyclically formed around the crater,
which is today submerged deep into the sea. Santorini is the biggest of the
group, called Strongyle ("Round") by the ancient Greeks. Next in size is
Thirassia, which was a part of Santorini
until it was separated from it by a later earthquake in 236 BC, and then, in the
center of the bay are the dark and smoldering "Burnt Isles" of Palea Kameni and
Nea Kameni, which emerged from the water between 1573 and 1720. Due to that explosion of
biblical proportions there have been numerous theories associating this place
with the mythical Atlantis, mentioned by Greek philosopher Plato in his
dialogues and in ancient Egyptian scripts. The historical fact is that the
enormous tidal waves from the explosion swept the northern coasts of Crete where
the Minoan civilization was flourishing, yet, despite previous theories, they
failed to destroy it, as, according to recent evidence, it survived the eruption
and managed to go on for a couple of hundred years.

Santorini's exceptionally atmospheric character is a blend of bare, awe-inspiring
volcanic rock, whitewashed villages perched along its edges and the deepest blue
sea water you can imagine. These fusions are almost surreally beautiful in the day
under the clear sunlight, while the spectacular sunsets turn the landscape into a series
of dreamy pictures. Its beaches are not white and sandy but dark and volcanic, yet no less
extraordinary. Its wines, due to that same volcanic soil,
are regarded among the world's finest. And its archaeological sites feature the most
fascinating excavations, where history allows in the mind room for the myth.
Many claim that the island's "magic" energy comes from the volcano
itself and imbues everything. You'll find out for yourself when
you visit this one-of-a-kind place.
